Our Story
Buying a sewing center in the middle of the pandemic in a country they couldn’t visit due to lockdowns, that had no customers was not for the faint hearted. The Avodah Global Directors were distressed at the prospect of the Cambodian workers being made unemployed in COVID, so despite the risks, they took the daring step of purchasing the factory in Phnom Penh. It was 13 months before they were able to get on a plane and see the team. Fast forward to today the team has tripled in size; over 80% lived below the poverty line prior to employment and were exposed to the risk of trafficking. The factory continues to produce high quality clothing for brands all over the world.
Our purpose
Our purpose can be summarised in three words: Educate, Employ and Empower. We provide the marginalized (trafficking survivors and other at-risk workers) with skills, training and employment so they have dignity and hope for an empowered future.
Our Mission
We aim to disrupt the global clothing manufacturing model of “battery hen” production, where thousands of workers are forced into unsafe, overcrowded workplaces to mass produce low quality garments, worn for a season and thrown away.
Instead, we are creating a network of small, family friendly digitally enabled sewing hubs with 30-50 workers paid a living wage and producing high quality apparel from sustainable fabrics. Each hub is designed to support 10-20 sewers in neighboring communities working from home.
